I don't think Kazuki Takahashi ever said that, but Atem did re-summon Blue-Eyes (Sugoroku's copy) to defeat Kaiba in their first duel in the manga. And Volume 5 of the manga has Atem/Yami Yugi holding a card with Blue-Eyes encircling him, but by then it was already Kaiba's ace, so...

It seems like at first, Magic & Wizards (original name for Duel Monsters) was just meant to be a two-part Magic the Gathering parody, but it got more popular than the main plot of the manga itself so they had to retcon the original lore of the Shadow Games being ways to punish evildoers and incorporate ancient monster shadow games and Atem's memories into the plot to give the card games more of a purpose. Which I think was ultimately the right call, since I can't imagine them doing the episodic yo-yos and toys and fireworks bullshit forever, and Bakura and Zorc would've been much more boring if they weren't tied to the lore of the God Cards and the ancient past, there'd have been no Marik or Pegasus and so on. It's a shame it became card game commercialism in the anime and manga, but then again, DB Super nowadays is just a commercial for Bandai figures and games which is why it has so many forms (GT only introduced SSJ4/Golden Oozaru whereas Super has already half a dozen new forms even if not including Berserk SSJ/FPSSJ/LSSJ).

Black Magician becoming Yugi/Atem's ace seems like it came out of nowhere in Yugi's duels with Haga and Pegasus, too. Early on he used Summoned Skull more, and prior to Duelist Kingdom it even looked like a middle-aged Gandalf character almost

i guess i'm going to have to concede defeat or something i think
:donovan3

I'm open to being corrected, too. For all we know Kazuki Takahashi might've planned for Yugi to inherit his grandpa's Blue-Eyes and use it as his ace, but if he ever had those plans, he never went through with them, and I've never read it anywhere in his Bunkoban comments or interviews that he planned that to be the case. If you have a source that says so I'm open to being informed

actually this seems to sort-of disprove that so maybe that was jst a rumour i think:

Q:
And among these one thousand cards, the most famous is the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. But why a white dragon with blue eyes? Why not, say, a black phoenix with red eyes? Why did you choose this animal with this color and specifically this eye color?

Kazuki Takahashi:
I wanted to design a mystical and cool monster for Yugi’s first rival, Seto Kaiba, when he appeared for their first battle. That monster became the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. In a black-and-white world [of manga], I wanted its name to evoke a feeling that would allow readers to conjure up its colors. Ultimately, the Blue-Eyes White Dragon turns out to be a woman — a woman with white hair, white skin, and blue eyes who is revealed in the story to be a spirit.

Yeah then it's confirmed that Blue-Eyes was always intended to be Yami's rival's monster. Takahashi also said later that the reason for Kaiba's modern day obsession with the Blue-Eyes was because of his past self's love for Kisara (the Blue Eyes' host).

Meanwhile, I think either Summoned Skull or Exodia may have been planned to be Atem's ace but Summoned Skull was hella ugly and fit in less with Atem's tricky style of dueling with stuff like Spellbinding Circle and Magical Hats, so Black Magician was instead elevated to that status.

Yeah the carnival funhouse art of the first 7 volumes (albeit, by the time of the Monster World arc it looked similar to DK arc's art), was perhaps the most accomplished art in the manga, aside from late Battle City and the Millennium World saga. DK and BC's artwork was technically more polished but ended up looking cartoonish, especially during the post-DK Dice Monsters portions.

Blue-eyes is the only Ka that's stated to rival the Gods. In Atem's final Ka battle with possessed Seto in the end of the manga's Memories World arc, Black Magician was one-shotted by Blue-Eyes before he could even destroy Blue Eyes' tablet, whom he remarked had a Heka (magical power) rivaling the Gods.
i knw this is kind-of late i think but looking-back i again remembered there is a chapter titled “the servants surpass god” i think

It's figurative because the final forms of Black Magician and BEWD were the final monsters summoned by Atem and Kaiba. Osiris had an ATK of 5000 in the manga before it was destroyed through Kaiba's Life Shaver and Obelisk's base attack is 4000, Blue Eyes is only 3000 and Black Magician's is only 2500, which is lower than average for a 7-star monster if anything in YGO's climate after Duelist Kingdom.

The card doesnt. Maybe Takahashi was influenced by the "servant surpassing God" thing in Battle City to make the BEWD Ka so powerful in the Memory World arc, but as far as the card game goes, it's very unlikely to defeat a God Card with a BEWD without some insane drawing luck. In fact, if BEWD is summoned after Osiris for instance it'd be left with only 1000 ATK.

for some-reason i think that at-least that was planned, especially since battle-city begins with showing battle with priest-seto & black-magician & blue-eyes-white-dragon over them i think

But in Memory World itself, it's openly stated that BEWD's Heka (magic energy) is equal to that of the Gods, and it completely stomped Black Magician/Mahado. Black Magician is nothing compared to the three gods.
