How was Pegasus so rich?

If Duel Monsters was in its infancy at the beginning of the series, how did Pegasus have a such a large amount of wealth? The Duelist Kingdom island alone would cost a trillion dollars in modern day money lol, not to mention the revolutionary technology needed to bring Duel Monsters to life. So how did he get so rich if the game was still new?

The game isn't exactly new, Pegasus first went to Egypt when he was 17 (he was 24 during the original series), and that's where he got the inspiration to make a children's monster trading card game based on stone tablets the dark wizards used to summon monsters with in the ancient past. Not to mention we later see Marik and Ishizu play Duel Monsters when they were kids.

That might be Viz-ism. I don't think it was ever stated how much money Pegasus had in the Japanese manga/anime.

i meant more it was mentioned sort-of off-handedly i think, like (this is how that was wrote once at-least i think):

How old are Marik and Ishizu?

Marik is 16 during Battle City and Ishizu is 20. Marik was probably about 10-11 in the flashback, considering that Yami Marik watched this from inside his mind.

According to the YGO wiki's manga timeline, Pegasus got his Millennium Eye in 1990, so that's when Industrial Illusions and Duel Monsters began. Marik was born in 1980 so he was already 10 by that point, and Yami Marik was "born" in 1992, making him 12. Duelist Kingdom took place in the spring months of 1997, thus Duel Monsters would have been 7 years old at most.

Their anime timeline is...less than detailed, to say the least.
