Rule 1: Be nice, be kind, be courteous.

Rule 2: Cite your sources.

Rule 3: Admit defeat.

Rule 4: Beware and avoid fallacies. If your side relies on a fallacy, it needs to be reconsidered.
List of Fallacies

Rule 5: If you have already decided that you won't change your opinion/interpretation, then don't debate.

Rule 6: He/she who posts last is not the winner. If your opponent abandons the debate, it doesn't necessarily mean you won. You may be too oblivious to realize you lost

Learning to admit defeat is what makes a great debater. When you can understand when you have been proven wrong, it will only make you better next time.

I'm a big fan of the last rule. I leave debates quite often (at least on Neoseeker), not because I've been overwhelmed, but because it becomes futile to continue.
