when i google'd "why was pikachu chosen as the mascot?" or some-thing i think i found-out that clefairy was initially supposed to be mascot of pokemon i think. :elmo :elmo :elmo

i looked that up just now i think. supposedly a gag-manga l0l. pikachu was there too i think. interesting i think i think.

It's never really been licensed or translated in the West. It was only ever translated to English by a crappy company called Chuang Yi, in Singapore.

Yeah, Clefairy was going to be, but its cute, pink appearance seeming to have more female appeal had Game Freak go with Pikachu due to it having a "cute" and "cool" design to appeal to both sexes. A lot of early merchandise still gives it comparable shine though such as the original Pocket Monsters manga already mentioned as well as it being a starter Pokemon in the board game Pokemon Master Trainer along with the Kanto starters, Pikachu and Meowth.

It's an okay time waster. Its style of humour is very typical of a gag manga, though it does have some memorable moments such as Clefairy transforming into "Mewthree".

I think Pikachu is just as popular as Eevee is now, however.
